Focus

Local Provenance

The Denbighshire Tree Nursery is located in St Asaph. The project focuses on growing local provenance native trees and wildflowers for conservation. This is achieved by harvesting seeds from species rich wildflower meadows, collecting tree cuttings and harvesting tree seeds at strategically picked locations in and around Denbighshire. The DCC Biodiversity team and volunteers harvest, plant and grow these at the Denbighshire Tree Nursery. The nursery aims to grow tens of thousands of native plants and trees, for use in various planting schemes and projects across the county. With the help of volunteers, the Denbighshire Tree Nursery enables us to restore important habitats and improve the local environment for people and wildlife throughout Denbighshire.

Project DECCA Statement

Within our Nature Recovery Action Plan it is recommended that all projects follow the DECCA framework for Ecosystem Resilience. Below is the DECCA statement for the Denbighshire Wildflower Project.

Diversity – We harvest a wide variety of native wildflower and tree seed and cuttings from in and around Denbighshire, which are then processed and grown on at the Tree Nursery. These are then used to create species rich meadows, woodlands and hedgerows which support a wide range of wildlife.

Extent – So far, over 40,000 native wildflowers grown at the Denbighshire Tree Nursery have been planted across our network of 72 acres of wildflower sites in and around Denbighshire. Native trees grown at the site will be planted from Autumn 2024, creating new woodlands and hedgerows throughout Denbighshire.

Condition – Planting native local provenance wildflowers and trees in the right places improves the quality and condition of the habitat for wildlife.

Connectivity – Sites where the wildflowers and trees have been planted are spread throughout Denbighshire, and act as stepping stones for wildlife to move through the landscape. Sites include schools,  road verges, community spaces and Town and community council owned land.

Aspects of ecosystem resilience – as outlined above all aspects of ecosystem resilience have been considered to ensure this project helps deliver local nature recovery.

Funding

The Denbighshire Tree Nursery is funded by the Welsh Government Local Places for Nature scheme accessed via the Local Nature Partnership and the Denbighshire County Council Climate Change and Ecological Emergency Programme.
