Clocaenog Red Squirrels Trust (CRST) was formed to support Red Squirrel conservation in Clocaenog forest.

CRST is a voluntary organisation which aims to protect and conserve red squirrels in Clocaenog Forest.

CRST is a fully constituted voluntary group with committee representatives made up from the Trust’s wider membership.

 

 

Partners

The Trust’s membership consists of local residents and people from surrounding areas. CRST’s key partner is Natural Resources Wales (NRW) who manage the forest.

CRST aim to:

 

  • Work together as a community group
  • Keep the forest free from grey squirrels to ensure it is a place where the reds can flourish
  • Work with key partner organisations and individuals to advance red squirrel conservation
  • Engage local people and the wider community in nature and heritage conservation. To raise awareness of the plight of red squirrels
  • Gain funding, resources and build relationships to secure the reds long-term future in the forest
  • Support scientific/ecological research, studies and investigations which will assist red squirrel survival as well as help to inform wider conservation work in the forest.
  • Volunteers are in the forest every week carrying out a range of practical activities that are all linked to supporting red squirrel conservation. Some of these activities include:
  • Placing/monitoring trail cameras around the forest, (currently there are over 80 cameras throughout the forest).
  • Ensuring feeder boxes are kept topped up
  • Building nest and feeder boxes as well as enclosure pens as part of a planned programme of red squirrel reinforcement (to help boost the population)
  • Health and welfare checks of red squirrels in enclosures before release into the forest
  • Radio tracking collared red squirrels to monitor health/welfare and habitat use
  • Working in partnership with ecologists and conservation professionals to support the work of the group
  • Grey squirrel monitoring and control CRST is a fully constituted voluntary group with committee representatives made up from the Trust’s wider membership.
